RUSH
Chronotopes @ Art Helsinki 2009
14.-15.11.2009, Wanha Satama
Press release (in Finnish)
------------------------------------------------------

AV-arkki, suomalaisen mediataiteen levityskeskus osallistuu ArtHelsinki 09 -messuille
ArtHelsinki 09 järjestetään 14.–15.11.2009 Wanhassa Satamassa Helsingissä (Pikku Satamakatu 3-5).

AV-arkin messuosastolla esitetään viisi nauhateosta AV-arkin levitysarkistosta.
Messuosaston kuratoinnista vastaa FM, kuraattori Kati Kivinen.

KRONOTOOPPEJA - Takaumia menneeseen / Nykyisyyden uudelleenjärjestelyjä sisältää seuraavat teokset:

*Hanna Ojamo*: /RUSH/, 2009, 2´41´
*Elina Saloranta*: /Huone (Elina Saloranta)/, 2008, 9´
*Oliver Whitehead*: /Unearth/, 2004, 3´
*Sampsa Virkajärvi*: /Kaksi kuvaa/, 2008, 10´54´´
*Seppo Renvall*: /Vapautemme hinta/, 1990, 8´
*Milja Viita*: /Kadonneet kirjeet, 1939-1945,/ 2008, 20´10´´

Toisinaan taiteilijaan tarttuu sinnikäs ’arkistokuume’, jonka seurauksena hän alkaa vimmaisesti työstää menneen ja nykypäivän välistä rajapintaa käyttäen apunaan erilaisia menneisyyden jälkiä, kirjeitä, valokuvia, muistoesineitä, filmipätkiä tai maalauksia. Arkistoidut muistot ja tallennettu historia heräävät uudelleen henkiin taiteilijoiden teoksissa, joissa pohditaan identiteetin, historian, muistin ja menetyksen merkityksiä.

News for the Fall

My shortfilm Rush (2009) has been chosen for Falstaff International Film festival in Stratford-upon-Avon, Great Britain, 14-20 November.
more info: Av-Arkki

and for the shortlisting & film book catalogue of Exground Film Festival in Wiesbaden, Germany, 13-22 November.

My solo show Asua/ Résider will open at Centre Culturel Francais, Cable Factory, on the 25th of November at 17-19. Warmly welcome!

Art Fair Suomi had roughly over 2000 visitors this year! I want to thank everybody who helped organizing and constructing the show for over 600 works of art and 250 artists. Although now completely exhausted, it was fun to see such a spirit in making Finnish contemporary art more known and accessible to a wider audience.
See you next year!

Building Art

We finished building the expo at Espace le Carré yesterday. It looks quite nice despite all the struggle we experienced while constructing it. I met with Outi in the morning, a Finnish girl living and working in Paris since a couple of years now who came to Lille to see my show, had a coffee and a stroll, and tried to enjoy the beautiful autumn weather. It is always nice to discuss differences between the French and the Finnish, as there are a few. As I´m still in a flu, I went straight home after a quick take-away lunch at my favorite bio food restaurant Envies de Saison. The autumn is further here than in Finland, trees in bright colours. Tomorrow, after the opening, we take an early morning train to Paris with my translator Salla, and catch up with Outi and Olivier, a French sculptor for a visit at the Centre Pompidou`s exhibition Elles, a show on women artists in French Museum of Modern Art collections. As the art is still a world of men, at least statistically, I am eager to see what kind of art the National Museum in France buys from women artists. On saturday evening I take the plane back to Helsinki. We start constructing Art Fair on monday morning with the Union of Photographer Artists.

Nobody puts Baby in the corner

I`m constructing in Lille for a show at the Escase le Carré (Square space, city of Lille ), the opening is on thursday. Arriving with a semi-strong flu after a back cramp on thursday, the flight as well as the first day was somehow fuzzy to me. However, despite all odds, all seems to be going quite well. There have been some hurdles, but mostly self-constructed and time-eating ones: starting to study again for a graduate degree in Arts Management at the Sibelius Academy, lots of work in Helsinki, resulting in a continuous lack of time in things such as writing a blog. In end- August, I wrote for the 22nd Hiff Helsinki International Film Festival`s catalogue on Eija-Liisa Ahtila`s films that came out on September 4th. The beginning of the fall has been sort of a limbo to me, and adding, that the exhibition preparations in the French side have not been going as smoothly as they could have due to various reasons. Despite, I think me and Laura will put up a fine show this week.

Patrick swayze died today. He was my idol back in dirty Dancing, now a movie that is so ridiculous I can`t even watch it. So I dedicate this blog to him. No matter how difficult the situation, you just have to keep on fighting. As his character once put it: Nobody puts Baby in the corner.

Victory

The suggestions for the state budget of 2010 for the Ministry of Education have arrived. At a quick glance, the numbers look victorious, taking notice of the over half a year of bombarding of the ministry with our together with other over 13 media arts organizations` demands to enhance and separate the amount of money shared for media arts in Finland. We didn`t get as much as we plead, but this is a good start. Looks like the first victory is here finally!
I couldn`t be more glad. In time, more will follow.

Also good things coming up for the artist pensions, as their amount is being redefined in relation to sharing the budjet. Important to take this into notice, as the pensions need to be doubled quickly.

(määrärahat/29/80/momentti 52)
-kohdassa määrärahan arviotu käyttö:
Mediataiteen edistämiseen 180 000

(Lisäksi: )Taiteilijaeläkkeiden ja niihin liittyvien perhe-eläkkeiden kehittämistarve arvioidaan osana taiteilijoiden sosiaaliturvan edistämistä.

There are no poor people in Singapore

My summer included moving houses, gardening, staying for a while without internet, travelling in Finland and a two week holiday in Singapore.

The trip to South- China Sea was my first in the area. I have only travelled to China in 2000, and this time it was easier, since the street signs were mostly in English. South-East Asia`s rich small country was fascinating, although it made me wonder weather it was actually true there are no poor people in Singapore. Statistically maybe, but in fact there is also a very strong family culture in Asia, people take care of each other if the government doesn`t. Every evening we took a beach tram back home to the hotel, and listened to kitchy 50s music, like the Beatles, coming from the loudspeakers in the jungle. Asians just love kitch. And here we were, for once, one of the very few European tourists - tourists come to SIngapore mostly from China and Malaysia, not from Europe it seems.

At the same time in Finland Savonlinna opera festival singers are disputing whether the opera hires only safe (foreign) singers in Finland, and Finnish politics is being unveiled from the illusion of being one of the less corrupted systems in the world.
